Algeria is the continent’s largest country by land and ranks tenth in the world spanning 920,000 square miles. Algeria is the largest Arabic-speaking country, and the largest Islamic country in the world. To get an idea of how large it is, the state of Texas could fit inside Algeria 3 times (Algeria is 3.4 times as big as Texas 2020)!
The smallest country of Africa is the island nation of Seychelles. Over 100 islands make up this country with just under 100,000 people inhabiting the islands. Seychelles is among the world’s leading countries to protect lands for threatened species, allocating 42% (G. Haines 2016) of its territory for conservation.
The smallest country in continental Africa is The Gambia. It is less than 31 miles wide with a total area of 4,361 square miles. Senegal surrounds The Gambia, leaving just fifty miles of coastline on the Atlantic. For comparison, The Gambia could fit inside the state of Tennessee 10 times (Tennessee (US) is 10 times as big as Gambia 2020)!
